La Fiorita: The Flowering of Castelluccio di Norcia

Castelluccio di Norcia is a small village, that lies in the “Parco nazionale dei Monti Sibillini” in the Umbria region, and with its 1452 metres above the sea is one of the highest in the Appennini. The historical centre is placed on the top of a hill, in the middle of a tableland bearing the same name, very wide, where the famous lentils are coltivated. The plateau is divided into 3 sections: Pian Grande, Pian Piccolo and Pian Perduto. For a total of 15 km², which during the year appear chromatically "poor".

The "monotony" is broken between late May and early July of each year through the spectacle of nature (the case was never more appropriate for such an idiomatic expression, ed) called "The Fiorita" or "The Fioritura" (The Flowering) of Castelluccio di Norcia. When the flowers bloom the plateau bursting with colors, with shades ranging from yellow ocher to red, from violet to white. For example, you can enjoy lentils (cultivated and proper to Castelluccio), gentianella, poppies, narcissuses, violets, asphodels, Eugeniae violet, clovers, oxalis and many more. And if you decide to take a walk in this "natural mosaic", maybe you will be lucky and you will watch some gazelles and roe deers... Despite the Feast of the Fiorita takes place every year in the third and in the last Sunday of June, there is no best or worst time to assist to the Flowering. And not even a climax. Depending on the period you will find more or less species, more or fewer colors. It depends on many factors: how much it rained during winter and spring; the period of exposure to the sun; by planting time, especially the lentil. Not to mention that each species of flora has a different blossom period.
